Eligibility

If you’re considering becoming a surrogate, the first step is to determine if you meet some minimum qualifications before applying. If you meet the following eligibility requirements, we encourage you to fill out a no commitment initial application form below.

  • Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent resident (e.g. valid green card).
  • Currently live in and plan to stay in the state of Florida throughout the process.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Between the ages of 21 and 42.
  • Has successfully delivered a child without complications.
  • Free of sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Has the support of her family. If married or partnered, the surrogate must have her partner’s support.

The Process

Becoming a surrogate mother consists of many mini-milestones that lead to the big delivery day. The process starts by submitting a non-committal initial application. The process remains the same but the timeframe depends on many factors like how quickly you’re matched with intended parents, how well you respond to IVF medications and time for embryo creation and transfer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to the surrogate mother journey:

1  Pre-screening

If the initial surrogate application passes the first set of eligibility requirements, you will be contacted by Jeannette to review medical records and conduct a background check.

2  Surrogacy Consultation

During this step surrogate mothers will have a video call with a surrogate coordinator who will explain the surrogacy process step-by-step. While surrogates can ask questions at any point throughout the process, this is a good time for surrogates to discuss whatever may be on their mind.

3  Intended Parent Matching

One of the more exciting steps in the process, you are matched with the intended parents. When a match is made, there will be a profile exchange with the intended parents, then a video call. If all parties agree, the match becomes official. Life Through Surrogacy has many intended parents waiting for the right surrogate match.

4 Medical Screening & Legal

Once you are approved by the intended parents’ chosen IVF clinic, you begin to take medications. You will be required to attend local monitoring appointments to ensure your body is responding to the medications properly. Once your body is ready, an appointment will be set up for the embryo transfer.

5 Monitoring Appointments & Embryo Transfer

Once you are approved by the intended parents’ chosen IVF clinic, you begin to take medications. 6 Pregnancy

You will be tested to confirm pregnancy. Once pregnant, you will receive an ultrasound at approximately 8 weeks for confirmation of a heartbeat. During the pregnancy, you will be required to attend all OB appointments and provide the intended parents with updates until the big delivery day arrives.

Surrogate Compensation

While delivering a baby for another family is an extraordinary experience, gestational surrogacy is a physical and emotional journey, which warrants proper compensation for the surrogate mother. The money paid to surrogates can help buy a car, put a down payment on a new home, pay off debt, allow them to get paid while staying home with their own young children, or even working their regular job.

Surrogate mother pay can vary, but the average surrogate living in Florida is paid a base of $45,000-$50,000 with additional compensation and benefits based on whether she’s an experienced gestational carrier and whether she has health insurance.

Once a base fee is established, a surrogate will receive additional payments of:

for the start of medications

for the embryo transfer

for a positive pregnancy test (with a beta that exceeds 100)

The total compensation package and payment disbursements is governed by a legal contract to protect both the surrogate mother and the intended parents.

1What is a Gestational Surrogate

With gestational surrogacy, the egg comes from either the intended mother or an egg donor, and the sperm comes from either an intended father or a sperm donor. The embryo is created through in vitro and then transferred into a surrogate. A gestational surrogate’s eggs are not used in this process, and the gestational surrogate is not biologically related to the baby! A gestational surrogate is sometimes referred to as a “gestational carrier.”

2Would I be related in any way to the baby?

In gestational surrogacy, the intended parents’ fertilized embryo is transferred into the gestational carrier’s uterus. Surrogates do not contribute genetically to the baby, so they are not related to the baby they carry.

3Why do other agencies pay surrogates more than you?

They actually do not. We are aware of other agencies claiming to pay surrogates up to $80,000. These misleading numbers inflate the base pay by including medical expenses, insurance expenses, and other  items that may not even be necessary. As a highly reputable surrogacy agency, transparency and trust is paramount. We never inflate actual surrogate compensation with medical and other support costs. Our average surrogate reimbursement package is competitive at approximately $45,000 – $50,000 plus a $300 monthly allowance and other financial incentives. 4Aside from the generous living expense reimbursement, what support is provided to surrogates during pregnancy?

Professional psychological counseling and peer support, as well as medical counseling and procedures directly related to the pregnancy are provided to the gestational carrier throughout the surrogacy process as needed. You are never alone during this process.

5Can a surrogate still keep her regular job during the time she’s pregnant as a surrogate? If so, does it affect her expense reimbursement during the surrogacy?

During her pregnancy a gestational surrogate can do anything any other pregnant woman can do, unless otherwise advised by her doctor. A surrogate can work her normal full-time job and also receive the legally-allowed reimbursement for her living expenses through the surrogacy.

6What geographic areas does Life Through Surrogacy serve?

Life Through Surrogacy, Inc. is a full-service surrogacy agency that matches prospective Intended Parents with prospective Gestational Carriers (also known as “Surrogate Mothers”) throughout the state of Florida. Intended Parents are sometimes from other states or countries, but we work exclusively with Gestational Carriers in Florida.

7Would I be a good candidate to be a carrier?

The ideal surrogate is already raising at least one child, has a healthy height-to-weight ratio, and lives a healthy lifestyle. Please refer to our other minimum requirements above to determine your likely eligibility prior to applying.
